Benefits of recycling:

Recycling not only helps the environment, but we all can get benefited from recycling things. Here are some of the benefits

  • Save Energy For most objects, it takes less energy to process the recycled materials than it does to use virgin materials. For instance, it takes significantly less energy to recycle paper than it does to create paper from trees. Besides, the energy required to acquire and transport the ‘virgin’ raw materials from their origins or natural sources is also saved.
Do you know that the energy we save when we recycle one glass bottle is sufficient to light a light bulb for four hours? Or 60 KGs of recycled waste paper can save a tree.
  • Recycling Saves Land Space for Waste Disposal We can save substantial land space by recycling our waste which otherwise goes to landfill sites. Each ton of solid waste that is diverted from disposal, whether recycled or composted, is one less ton of solid waste that requires disposal which means saving land space.
  • Save Money One important feature of recycling that affects us all is the fact that it can save money! It helps us in reducing the expense for the production of new products from ‘virgin’ materials including the complete production cycle starting from procuring the raw materials, transporting them from their origin to production places, processing and manufacturing costs. Household recycling programs such as recycling kitchen waste into compost also helps save money as this lessens the need to purchase compost from garden stores.
  • Control Air Pollution and Water Pollution Recycling benefits the air and water. When we dump garbage at landfills, decomposed waste regularly releases harmful gases and chemicals at landfill sites. These released gases and chemicals result in air pollution and contamination of water when these chemicals percolate in ground water.
  • Using products made from recycled materials can also generate less pollution. For example an automobile made from recycled aluminum is lighter than an automobile made from steel. This requires less gasoline to power the car and reduces air pollution.
  • Creates Jobs If we can create more recycling opportunities, we would be able to generate more jobs that will help many people who have lost the jobs due to recession.
  • Earn Money Recycling can be done at home as well as in alliance with city programs. Many scrap yards pay for metal from the scrap of the soda cans and soup cans we use every day. One interesting fact is this that when one ton of steel is recycled, 2,500 pounds of iron ore, 1,400 pounds of coal and 120 pounds of limestone are conserved.
  • One Man’s Waste is another Man’s Treasure There are some excellent ways to recycle your unwanted goods by either selling them or giving it for free. There are also some charities that work on behalf of certain disadvantaged groups and are always on the look out for reasonable quality used goods.
  • Recycling decreases the need for mining Mining is the world's most deadly occupation. On an average, 40 mine workers are killed on the job every day, and many more are injured. Also, decrease in mining will help conserve nature.

Additional Benefits

  • Recycling also helps protect the environment. Every ton of paper that is made from recycled materials saves 17 trees, about 450 gallons of oil and about 7,000 gallons of water.
  • When there is less deforestation to acquire virgin materials or to make space for landfills, habitat for wildlife remains safe. More habitats for animals mean less animal extinction.
